July Recap

For our July Social we met up at Edworthy Park. It was threatening to thunderstorm but at the last minute the sun came out to join us!

We awarded last month's Economy Blocks to Linda H and announced the new block lotto: Rally Block

Linda brought example blocks for our QuiltCon 2019 Charity Quilt as well as the final design and kits for members to make blocks, either by paper piecing or by Wing Clipper.  Instructions coming soon!

Members are also continuing to fully finish donated quilts and quilt tops for our charity Sonshine.

Show and tell was absolutely beautiful in the park

There are currently 6 spots left in the Square Peg Round Hole Krista Hennebury workshop. Registration will be opening up to the public later today.

And finally, after many requests, here is the recipe for Linda S's Quinoa Salad that she brought last night:

July 2018 - MQG Rally block

This month I'm digging up an MQG block from Feb. 2016, and its super easy.

The block uses an 8" Background square. I have used Kona Charcoal. Let's say keep it really dark. Kona charcoal, pepper, black, or a tone on tone with charcoal and black...but make sure your fabric choice is modern!

Add in a couple of 1.5" strips of orange or mustard and you are good to go.

Here is the link to the Rally Quilt Pattern.  You will need to sign into the MQG to access it.

Victoria MQG has posted a great tutorial with lots of photos, so be sure to have a look there as well.

Blocks get trimmed to 7" wide but don't worry about trimming the height.  Just keep it as tall as possible.

General Rules:

1. Make one quilt block (or more) following the pattern and color scheme outlined in the monthly post.  For every block you make and bring to that month’s meeting, you will get one entry in the lotto.  If you are unable to attend the meeting, but really want to participate in the lotto, comment on this post or contact Philippa and we’ll try to work it out. Remember, you must be a member of CALMQG to participate.
2. The winner gets ALL THE BLOCKS to make a quilted project from them (guild reserves the right to vote on splitting up the blocks between more than one winner if there are enough entries).  If you win, the blocks become yours and you can use them in any way you choose.
3. We would like to see your finished project, either in person or pictures, within a year of winning the blocks.  You may continue to participate in and win subsequent block lottos during that time (at least for now…we may elect that you can not win again until you've shown your finished project).  After the year is up, you cannot participate or win again until the original project is finished.
4. Use modern fabrics that you like or love! If you are unsure about your fabric selection as it relates to 'Modern', just ask.
5. Have fun!  Keep in mind that (most likely) someone else will be taking home your block to incorporate into a larger piece and things must fit together (literally, …so keeping your block true to size is probably the most important thing), but you should also make it yours and enjoy the process!
Share with the tags @calgarymqg #calmqgblocklotto #calgarymqg on IG or on the Calgary Modern Quilt Guild Facebook Group. If you would like help with either of those, contact your guild's Social Media Coordinator: Tamara Kerelchuk @ninjadesigns or @calgarymqg
Have fun!

June Recap

In June we tried out a beautiful new space - the Uplands in Hawkwood.  While this is quite the trek for some of our southern-dwelling members we had a good turnout in this northwest hangout.  The extra space made it much easier to set up demo stations for our skills night.

The June meeting programming was "Skills Night: Binding". We had Jera demoing machine binding, Linda demoing how to cut continuous bias binding, Heather with mitered binding, and Mary with how to add piping to your binding.

You find continuous binding resources here or here or here is a video on how to cut and sew it.
You can source binding piping from amazon here (kit) and here (spool).

We also announced the summer challenge: Colour Wheels! We'll be revealing our colour wheels and awarding prizes in September.

We have had a lot of members finishing charity quilts for our charity Sonshine:

Sonshine has 25 residences that house women and their children and each unit turns over at least once per year. We provide quilts to everyone who enters and it's entirely possible it is one of their only possessions when they arrive.  We're still asking for:
  • approximately "double-ish": 60-65" x 72-75"
  • approximately "bunk-bed": 48x60
  • there isn't a lot of need for crib-sized at this time, but they will accept them and send them to their affiliated shelters.
You can submit fully finished quilts, quilts that need binding, or just tops and we will employ other members to finish them.

Show and tell had some amazing quilts, mini quilts, and bags:

Our June Sew Day was also at the Uplands in Hawkwood and it is a beautiful space to work in.  It has enough room that everyone can spread out, but it's an open space so you can still see what everyone else is doing and talk to them openly.  We were working on Terrace quilts which employ 39 curves! You can see updates on instagram under #calmqgterracequilt and #calmqgsewday .

Mary taught us her techniques for managing curves and we're hoping to create a group entry for Heritage Park next year full of Terrace quilts. If you'd like to join us you can find the free pattern by Violet Craft here.  Linda and Philippa showed off their finished quilt tops too.

We also opened member registration for the October Poppyprint workshops.  The Saturday Speed Date with Improv class is already full, but there are a couple of spots left in the Square Peg Round Hole class - registration is currently only open to members.
