January 2017 Block Lotto - Shutter Quilt

I have found the perfect pattern for our first lotto of 2017, and one that is sure to brighten up our snowy and cold Calgary winter.

The Shutter Quilt was designed by Mandy Munroe for Timeless Treasures.

We will be using solids, primarily from the candy inspiration picture below. Please try and use one medium tone, and one a bit lighter. As you can see from the sample above, the difference is sometimes very slight, or in the odd block, a bit more pronounced. If you feel your colour combo would work in the above quilt, then go for it!

Here is the link for the block pattern.
Each block will require 2 solids 14 x 10.5 each.
Finished block will measure 10.5 x 20.

A few tips and tricks....

  • Pay very close attention to the seam allowance in the center section....it only takes  a few extra threads per seam and your piece will be too short.
  • You may choose to cut the centre strips a little longer, and trim to 7" after joining strips into unit.
  • Alternative...foundation paper piece this section, using this Template I whipped up! Cut strips a bit wider to use this technique. The finished unit is a little wide, so  trim completed centre unit down to 7" before adding end pieces.
  • Play close attention to which way the center unit goes. Top strip matches colour of fabric on the left.

Blocks will be due at our February Meeting.

An extra little thing for next month.  Please bring a modern fat quarter for an activity we will be doing at the meeting.
