October 2019 - Lockup

Thanks to Karin King for choosing this month's Block Lotto

As part of our memberships with the Modern Quilt Guild, we have access to a huge library of resources including webinars, quilts of the month, tutorials, and even a public television show called Fresh Quilting!
This month's Block Lotto is one of many blocks studies that the guild also publishes for its members, and was published by the MQG in January 2018.

The Lockup block is by Riane Menardi Morrison of the Central Iowa MQG. It's twice as long as it is wide, making it a little unconventional but lots of fun to play with!
You will need to sign into the MQG site to get access to the block.

Colours: As above.
Finished size: 8-1/2" x 4-1/2
Fabric required: Scraps or fat quarters of two different colors.

General Rules:

1. Make one quilt block (or more) following the pattern and colour scheme outlined in the monthly post.  For every block you make and bring to that month’s meeting, you will get one entry in the lotto.  If you are unable to attend the meeting, but really want to participate in the lotto, comment on this post or contact Philippa and we’ll try to work it out. Remember, you must be a member of CALMQG to participate.
2. The winner gets ALL THE BLOCKS to make a quilted project from them (guild reserves the right to vote on splitting up the blocks between more than one winner if there are enough entries).  If you win, the blocks become yours and you can use them in any way you choose.
3. We would like to see your finished project, either in person or pictures, within a year of winning the blocks.  You may continue to participate in and win subsequent block lottos during that time (at least for now…we may elect that you can not win again until you've shown your finished project).  After the year is up, you cannot participate or win again until the original project is finished.
4. Use modern fabrics that you like or love! If you are unsure about your fabric selection as it relates to 'Modern', just ask.
5. Have fun!  Keep in mind that (most likely) someone else will be taking home your block to incorporate into a larger piece and things must fit together (literally, …so keeping your block true to size is probably the most important thing), but you should also make it yours and enjoy the process!

6. Share with the tags @calgarymqg #calmqgblocklotto #calgarymqg on IG or on the Calgary Modern Quilt Guild Facebook Group. Have you tagged yourself #calmqgmember yet?

Quiltcon 2018 Charity Quilt

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to sew Dresden Plates and Rail Fence squares for our QuiltCon 2018 Charity Quilt! Following what was discussed at the meeting, below are some further instructions:

Rail Fence Low Volume Blocks: Please sew 11” square blocks with the fabric provided and do not trim - we will do that when constructing the quilt. If you want to add more fabric please ensure it is low volume.

Dresden Plates: Please feel free to make any variation of a Dresden Plate. There are many tutorials and patterns online including:

Please make approximately the size of Dresden Plate indicated on your bag of fabric, without stressing too much (9.5” rather than 10” is fine, etc.).  Please remember if your final Dresden Plate is 10” each wedge will be 5” (because there are wedges on both sides of the circle, completing the 10”).

If you want to add a bit of fabric from your stash, please stay within this palette provided from MQG.  Thanks for your help everyone!  We can’t wait to see all of the finished blocks and Dresden Plates at the October 19th meeting!

Delivery of Charity Quilts to Sonshine Community Services

Last week, Jera and I had the opportunity to deliver the charity quilts to Sonshine Community Services. When we arrived at the location I was struck by the fact that this building is a women’s shelter. It’s likely that I have driven by this place over a dozen times and had no idea of the incredible work going on inside.

Women can stay at Sonshine for up to a year and access the supports they offer. During this time the families are supported by a large group of people ranging from counseling to career skills and education. As a teacher I was most impressed by the supports being provided to children. Sonshine has its own childcare facilities that specialize in treating children who have experienced trauma. This is also available to children who will benefit from the services who are not housed within the facility. The difference this care will make in the lives of these children is immense!

Barb, the volunteer coordinator, who provided us with a tour of the facility, greeted us. First, you need know that Barb is the warmest person, by the end of our visit it felt like we were friends. I am happy to know that the women and children who access Sonshine’s services have someone like Barb in their corner. Second, you need to know that everyone who works at Sonshine has dedicated their lives to helping very vulnerable women and children. Through some good fortune I have never had to access a women’s shelter, although I know people who have. I have some idea of the crisis that leads a person to the necessity of accessing these types of services. I’m almost certain that every woman in our Guild knows someone who has needed these services and I am certain that’s why everyone was so enthusiastic in their support for this cause.

We delivered 48 quilts! As each new family arrives at Sonshine, their apartment will be prepared and the quilts will be on their beds. The quilts will become one of their first possessions on a hopeful journey. Sonshine passes along their gratitude for the generosity of such an extensive quilt donation.

The need at Sonshine continues and we will continue to donate quilts to their cause throughout 2016. At our March sew day (which is actually a sew night on March 18th) we will finish putting together the QAYG blocks and prepping binding for those quilts. At the February meeting attendees will get a chance to try longarming on donation quilts as well.

Stay tuned for opportunities to get involved in this very worthy project!
