Cheryl Arkison Workshops

The Calgary Modern Quilt Guild is pleased to be bringing Calgary's very own Queen of Improv Cheryl Arkinson to teach her “Random Abstractions” and “Sew What You Mean” workshops.
Random Abstractions
Using your favourite landscape, structure, or place we will translate it into a quilt design. With various improv techniques and direction you can capture your inspiration. No two projects will be the same.

Sew What You Mean
Say what you want to say, but say it in a quilt. From simple holidays greetings to profound statements, use words in quilts to convey your message. This class covers planning and construction for any letter. This is an improv technique. Fabric selection and value are also discussed in the class.

Time to prepare - Summer Cut It Up Challenge

In prep for our summer challenge, we all have some homework to do!

Search your sewing room and come up with an incomplete project that no longer sparks joy and bring it to our June Meeting.

  • It could be a small quilt top, a couple of blocks or other WIP.
  • Please keep the combined size to about the size of a tea towel or less.
  • We will do a brief show and tell before drawing numbers to divvy them up.

The challenge will be to adopt someone else's orphan and turn it into a modern treasure, that you will keep. The finished quilts will be due at the September Meeting.

April Meeting Recap

Our April 19 meeting included learning about various freemotion domestic machine quilting techniques and tips from our talented members Josée, Linda, and Celia!

Tips from Linda

Josée uses various marking tools to help with her quilting - stencils and chalk, markers, Frixion pens, etc.

Ruler work with Celia!

Can you believe the 31 gorgeous blocks we had in this months lotto?

Next up was show and tell. We had many gorgeous Terrace quilts (free pattern designed by Violet Craft for Robert Kaufman fabrics).

Here are the rest of the show and tell photos.

We want to see what our Calgary MQG members are working on - Please hashtag #calmqgmember so we can like your projects throughout the month!

See you at our May meeting!
